In my Mind’s Eye

I spent my early childhood in remote areas of what is now Papua New Guinea.  Life there was simple but definitely not idyllic; it was a world far removed from the structure and amenity of Western civilization.

As an adult I have always found the built environment intriguing: both the cities of today and their ancient equivalents.  I wonder about their carefully calculated form and structure, their symbolic content and the vision and purpose that led to their creation.

I tend to see the modern city through the eyes of a stranger – possibly someone from another world or another time.  Or perhaps I am still the child immersed in a fantasy world…
